Eastern Arizona College honored head volleyball coach Shari Kay for achieving a historic milestone: her 500th career victory, earned last Saturday during a road match at Arizona Western College. The recognition took place during EA’s home contest against Central Arizona College on Sept. 26 at Guitteau Gymnasium.
For more than two decades, Coach Kay has been the heartbeat of the Monster Volleyball program, building not only a tradition of excellence on the court but also a culture of integrity, resilience, and personal growth.
“Tonight, we will celebrate not just a number, but a legacy,” said EA Athletic Director Paul Demuth. “Coach Kay’s impact goes far beyond the scoreboard. She has shaped the lives of countless student-athletes, inspiring them to be confident, strong, and successful in every aspect of life.”
Since taking the helm of the program in 2002, Kay has guided the Gila Monsters to:
- Five Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) championships
- Seven Region I championships
- Five district championships
- Five trips to the NJCAA National Tournament — finishing in the top eight twice
Her success has also been recognized with several coaching honors, including:
- ACCAC Coach of the Year in 2005, 2009, and 2011
- District Coach of the Year in 2010, 2011, 2017, 2022, and 2024
- Induction into the ACCAC Hall of Fame in 2021
- Induction into the NJCAA Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach
Coach Kay’s career trajectory began at Eastern Arizona College, where she earned her associate degree and competed in both volleyball and basketball. As a standout player for the Gila Monsters, she helped lead the volleyball team to third- and fourth-place finishes at the NJCAA National Tournament. After graduating from EA, she continued her playing career at BYU–Hawaii, where her team captured the national championship in 1991. Before returning to her alma mater as head coach, Kay served as an assistant coach at New Mexico State University, Yavapai College, Scottsdale Community College, and EA under legendary coach Jerry Hekekia.
“While 500 wins mark a significant achievement, Shari’s true legacy lies in the generations of student-athletes she’s mentored,” said EA President Todd Haynie. “Her unwavering commitment to her athletes — on and off the court — remains the cornerstone of her coaching philosophy. We are grateful for the legacy she’s built and the lives she’s changed.”
