Eastern Arizona College men’s soccer makes history with first national ranking

Gila Monsters climb to No. 16 nationally, finish tied for second in ACCAC standings

THATCHER, Ariz. — Eastern Arizona College’s men’s soccer team has reached an historic milestone, earning its first national ranking and climbing to No. 16 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I poll during the 2026 season.

Under head coach Abe Tizaf, the Gila Monsters also finished tied for second in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) standings with a 5-2-1 conference record, establishing themselves among the conference’s top teams.

“This season has been a reflection of the hard work, discipline, and commitment our players have shown from day one,” Tizaf said. “Earning our first national ranking is a tremendous accomplishment for this program, but what makes me most proud is the culture these young men are building. They believe in each other, they compete for each other, and they represent Eastern Arizona College with pride.”

The Monsters dominated defensively, allowing a conference-low five goals in eight league games while scoring 23 goals, the third-highest total in the ACCAC. The team also demonstrated exceptional discipline, recording just 15 yellow cards and no red cards during conference play.

The milestone comes during an exciting year for EA soccer, which also celebrated the renovation of John Mickelson Field with a ceremonial kickoff and soccer doubleheader Oct. 10.

EAC Athletic Director Paul Demuth said the team’s accomplishments reflect the continued growth of the College’s athletic programs.

“What Coach Tizaf and these student-athletes have accomplished is something our entire athletic department can be proud of,” Demuth said. “To earn the first national ranking in program history while competing in such a strong conference speaks volumes about the direction of Eastern Arizona College soccer.”

Eastern Arizona enters the NJCAA Region I Tournament as the No. 3 seed following conference tiebreaking procedures. With a historic national ranking and one of the conference’s strongest defenses, the Gila Monsters now turn their attention to postseason play.
