The Associated Students of Eastern Arizona College (ASEAC) will hold a commemorative Veteran’s Day program at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, in front of the College’s clock tower. ASEAC President, Mark Wren, will introduce the featured speaker, EAC SBDC director and US military veteran, Eric Bejarano. Dr. Gary Sorensen, EAC dean of students, will open the program.
Veterans Day is dedicated to honoring and expressing gratitude to all military veterans who have served (and currently serve) in the United States Armed Forces. The date, November 11, was chosen because it marks the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. The focal point for official, national ceremonies for Veterans Day continues to be the memorial amphitheater built around the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. At 11 a.m. on November 11, a combined color guard representing all military services executes “Present Arms” at the tomb.
Originally known as Armistice Day, the holiday was established to commemorate the end of World War I and to honor the veterans of that conflict. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to include veterans of all U.S. wars and conflicts.
“Veterans Day is a time for Americans to recognize and show appreciation for the sacrifices and service of the men and women who serve and have served in the U.S. military,” said Sorensen. “We feel it is important to recognize and remember the men and women of America’s Armed Forces and to provide that experience for our student body and the extended community. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend this solemn event.”
Members of EAC band will perform patriotic and uplifting music prior to the ceremony, and EAC choirs will sing the Star-Spangled Banner and following a moment of silence, EAC music professor, Chase Moore, will lead a special presentation of taps.
