What do Mammography Technologists do?

Mammography technologists perform specialized imaging exams to detect and diagnose breast diseases, including cancer. They work closely with patients, preparing them for procedures, positioning them correctly, and ensuring high-quality images are captured. These professionals also maintain and operate mammography equipment, follow radiation safety protocols, and assist in patient education and follow-up care. Tasks are performed in a variety of settings, including hospitals, diagnostic imaging centers, outpatient clinics, and private practices.

  • Tuition: Eastern Arizona College’s in-state tuition is $98 per credit hour. Out-of-state tuition for non-residents is $398 per credit hour.

Admission Requirements

  • Pre-Requisite Courses: Must be completed prior to starting RAD 310.
  • ARRT R.T. (R) Certification required

Seminar Style Course Structure allowing Graduates to:

  1. Receive an Eastern Arizona College certificate in Women’s Health Imaging.
  2. Receive a 40 hours of initial training certificate, provided by the instructor.
  3. Challenge the ARRT Post-Primary Certification Examination.
  4. Complete initial Mammography coursework in 4 consecutive days.

Convenient Class Schedule

The curriculum utilized for this 4-day course, established by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) and Mammography Educators, satisfies the MQSA’s 40-hour initial training requirement. It comprises 32 hours of initial mammography coursework, 8 hours of Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT), a brief overview of breast sonography, and an introduction to bone densitometry, all designed to support skill development. Additionally, this course covers all ARRT Mammography exam content specifications. Hands-on positioning workshops will be available, offering the opportunity to work one-on-one with instructors. The week concludes with a registry review conducted in an interactive and engaging learning style.

At the completion of this Mammography course, participants will be able to:

  • Obtain knowledge to help prepare for the ARRT Mammography exam.
  • Demonstrate basic mammogram positioning skills for the CC and MLO views.
  • Explain advanced positioning techniques for supplementary views, difficult patients, and implant patients.
  • Review and gain knowledge on breast anatomy, disease processes, and pathology.
  • Describe how various physical characteristics of the x-ray tube affect mammographic imaging.
  • Perform mammographic quality control testing procedures per MQSA guidelines.
  • Describe and develop a comprehensive quality assurance program for digital mammography.
  • Understand the differences between regulatory bodies, such as MQSA, ACR, and the ARRT.
  • Describe the parameters in digital imaging that control resolution and contrast.
  • Describe newly emerging technologies associated with digital mammographic imaging.
