Thatcher, AZ—Eastern Arizona College’s Physics Department will be offering two rocketry courses this fall. Advanced Rocketry (PHY298E, Section #0614), taught by John Ratje, will meet September 9, 23, 30 and October 21. Beginning Rocketry (PHY298D, Section #6094), also taught by Ratje, will meet October 7, 14, and 21. Both classes will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in MS-109 at EAC’s Thatcher Campus. These classes are each one credit hour and can be transferred as an elective to any university in Arizona.
The Gila Valley Rocketry Association, a local club that Ratje is associated with, is now a part of the national Rocketry association (NAR) and has been designated Section #814. There are only four sections in Arizona. “We have applied to the Federal Aviation Administration for authorization for a high-power launch site at the Discovery Park Campus,” explains Ratje. “The FAA waiver will allow high-power rockets to be launched to an altitude of 4,000 feet above grade and we have scheduled that launch for the same day as the student launches, October 21. We have six, class 2, high-power rockets preparing for launch that day.”
