Area students receive scholarships from EAC

Thatcher, AZ—EAC’s 28th Annual Scholarship Banquet was held last month to recognize the scholastic achievements of over 80 EAC students. The banquet, held at EAC’s campus in Thatcher, recognized donors and recipients of more than 50 scholarships. Many of the scholarships are annually funded by the generous contributions of various organizations and individuals, while the other awards are endowed scholarships, funded by the earnings of endowment monies provided by the generous gifts of various donors.

Sonya Maes, of Thatcher, daughter of Lupe Dominguez, was awarded the Harvey J. and Loretta Olsen Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a sophomore seeking a university transfer degree.

Lacey Lijlekvist, of Safford, daughter of Dorothy Despain and Buddy Lijlekvist, received the Farrel and Bessie Layton Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student with at least a 3.0 GPA who demonstrates a financial need.

Lorena Aguirre, of Thatcher, daughter of Yolanda Gonzalez, received the H. Greg Brockmeier Scholarship. This scholarship is presented annually to a new or returning student.

Jessica Judd Allen, of Safford, daughter of Harold and Jackie Judd, received the Anna Deane Millet, Don and Carlotta Pace Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student who has achieved academically while a freshman at EAC and who will be returning in the coming year.

Nicole Niesen Weech, of Pima, daughter of Chris and Carla Niesen, received the Phyllis Martin Lord Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student demonstrating economic need, scholarship potential, characteristics of personal integrity, and service to family, church, and community.

Cheyenne Gentry, of Pima, daughter of David and Janet Gentry, received the John Mickelson Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding freshman returning to EAC for the sophomore year.

Norma Harvey, of Safford, daughter of Jerry and Beatrice Jones, received the Helen Johnson Bone Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to someone who demonstrates qualities of personal integrity, character, and good citizenship.

Deserai Hatch, of Safford, daughter of Michelle and Darrin Webb, received the Fred and Olga Pace Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving Graham County resident returning to EAC in pursuit of a degree that provides preparation for gainful employment.

Cody Gentry, of Pima, son of Dave and Janet Gentry, received the Ella T. and J. David Lee Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to an EAC student majoring in either Administrative Information Services or another vocational field.

Alexandria Alder, of Thatcher, daughter of Preston and Melissa Alder, received the Eldon and Lucille Palmer Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student from Thatcher High School majoring in music.

Kimala Mckenzie Taylor, of Pima, daughter of Doug and Leora Taylor, received the Ashley Marie Beals Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the EAC Nursing Program or pursuing an associate of applied science in pre-medical science.

Nichole Baker, of Safford, daughter of Michael Baker, received the Safford Rotary Club Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving Graham County high school graduate.

Nicholas Corona, of Safford, son of Tammy Beuden; and Kelly Kaniut of Safford, daughter of Jared and Krista Hancock, received the Safford Lions Club Scholarship. The recipients of this scholarship are incoming freshmen who are graduates of a Graham County high school.

Thomas Smith of Safford, son of Karla and Buster Smith, received the Paul and Blanca Roberts Percussion Scholarship. This scholarship is a awarded to a percussionist involved in the EAC music program.

Cheyenne Iske, of Safford, daughter of Afred and Ellen Iske, received the GSWC Woman’s Club of Safford Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a Gila Valley high School graduate majoring in music.

Alfredo Chavez, of Thatcher, son of Alfredo and Maria Chavez, received the National Bank of Arizona Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a degree in business who exhibits financial need.

Heather Leaman, of Safford, daughter of Jamie Stone and Wesley Taylor, received the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 10385 Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a new or returning student who is a veteran or relative of a veteran of the United States Armed Services. The recipient must be a full or part-time student and must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Megan Sherwood, of Pima, daughter of Matt and Kim Sherwood, received the Keith and Kathleen McBride Crockett Family Alumni Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who is the child or grandchild of an EAC alumnus.

Joseph Allred II, of Safford, son of Terry L. Allred and Micah L. Mleynek, received the Graham County Republican College Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a graduate of a Graham County high school who is a registered Republican upon his or her 18th birthday.

Adina Morris, of Safford, daughter of Ana and Andrei Mosneag; and Matthew Haban, of Sierra Vista, son of Art and Elena Haban, received the Donald J. Caldwell Educational Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to students in the Nursing Program.

Deidra Hansen, of Pima, daughter of Jon and Denise Hansen; and Brock Reynolds of Thatcher, son of Russ and Pamela Reynolds, received the Alumni Association Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to children or grandchildren of EAC alumni who demonstrate exemplary character traits and academic ability.

Cara Jaye, of Ft. Thomas, daughter of Hollie Williams and Duane Jaye, received the Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student from Graham or Greenlee County who is enrolled in the EAC Nursing Program.

DeWitt Evans, of Safford, son of Scott and Rebecca Evans, received the Bernstein Brothers Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who is pursuing an education in industrial technology or environmental biology.

Bobby Ortega, of Safford, son of Lucilda Montiagat and Ernesto Ortega, received the Sumitomo-Phelps Dodge Scholarship. The scholarship provides full annual tuition to an industrial technology student.

Matt Allen, of Thatcher, received the Allen and Marie A. Cress Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a new or returning full-time student participating in the a cappella choir. The recipient demonstrates good work qualities, study habits, and is a positive role model representing Eastern Arizona College and the EAC Music Department.
