THATCHER, AZ—Eastern Arizona College’s Discovery Park Campus lecture series returns this spring with the first in a series of free slideshows and lectures given by Harry Swanson, dean of Discovery Park Campus. He will present the highly-anticipated lecture, “The Safford Grid,” on January 10, 2009, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Jupiter Room of Discovery Park Campus.

“This lecture will present information on one of the most extensive engineering feats ever accomplished in Southeastern Arizona,” says Swanson. He continues, “On the mesa tops surrounding Peck Wash and Big Spring Wash, just north of Bryce and Eden, stands an amazing and enigmatic collection of grids, check dams, and rock cairns. These water retention features, constructed by Native Americans over 700 years ago, cover 203 acres in 38 different clusters. Although very impressive, these constructions are difficult to appreciate from the ground, but from the air they will take your breath away.”
