EAC Education Department offering Substitute Teacher Role Preparation this month
By Lori Dugan
THATCHER, AZ—This spring, the Eastern Arizona College Education Department will be offering a short-term class for students interested in becoming substitute teachers.
Substitute Teacher Role Preparation (EDU100B) is designed to give potential substitute teachers a background in what is required to fulfill the responsibilities of a substitute teacher. Substitute teaching is a challenging job, and an important part of the school community. Many school districts currently have a tough time meeting their staffing needs for substitutes. This course will help local districts fill that need by providing more qualified candidates for these positions.
For individuals qualifying as a regular certified substitute teacher, this can be a rewarding job. For many, it’s their first opportunity to be a teacher and the experience may inspire some to work toward certification as a regular classroom teacher. “A good sub generally makes a good certified teacher,” said JoAnne Ellsworth, EAC’s elementary education instructor.
“We have been working with Donna McGaughey, Graham County School Superintendent, to develop a workshop that lets participants build a ‘tool kit’ and be as effective as possible in the classroom,” Ellsworth continued. “Everyone in this class will learn to follow a check list for substitute teachers.”
The course will provide students with the instructional and classroom management tools and strategies to be successful in the K-12 setting. It will also prepare individuals to enter a variety of classroom settings and situations and carry out the instructions left by the regular classroom teacher or implement meaningful lessons when no instructions have been given.
Substitute Teacher Role Preparation is a one-credit course (Section #7049) and will be taught as a two-day sequence on Friday, February 8, from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, February 9, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Academic Programs Building–Room 115.
Students age 55 and over qualify for EAC’s Senior Citizen Tuition Scholarship which covers the full cost of in-state tuition. This one-credit class will cost $55 for other Arizona Residents. However, in many cases, current EAC students can add this class to their schedule at no additional cost. To register, contact the Records and Registration Office at (928) 428-8270 or stop by the EAC Student Services Building. You can also register online at www.eac.edu.
