Tradition maintains that the beginning of November is Hallows Mass or All Saints Day when Christians hold in loving remembrance the souls of the dead. The evening before this commemoration was a sacred, all-night vigil of celebration, song, and prayer for departed family members. Hallows Eve was commemorated with masks (to represent the departed), candles (to ward off the darkness of death), tales of the mystery of the afterlife, colorful vestments, and—of course—food. This was calculated to create a celebratory atmosphere of humor to confront the very power of death.
Today, this celebration has become our secular tradition of trick-or-treat, costumes, masks, and candles in jack-o-lanterns: Halloween!
“When you consider it, a choir concert is a lot like Halloween,” said EAC’s director of choral music, Dr. Bruce Bishop. “People wear special costumes, their faces are masks communicating music, and stage lights burn like candles in pumpkins. The ‘trick’ is to have a concert full of songs which are a ‘treat’ for the audience. Fall Sing: Halloween Edition 2015 is just that kind of concert.”
The choirs of EAC will present a Halloween bag filled with songs: cowboy songs, hymn songs, Uruguayan songs, fanfare songs, triumphant songs, prayer songs, love songs, motivational songs, Lithuanian songs, barbershop songs, inspirational songs, flirty songs, zombie songs, rock songs, happy songs, Latin songs, Elvis songs, magic songs, epic songs, dance songs, reverent songs, Broadway songs, Spanish songs, pilgrim songs, and folk songs. Fall Sing: Halloween Edition 2015 will take the stage of the EAC Fine Arts Auditorium on Thursday, October 29, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, October 30, at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, October 31, in a special 2 p.m. matinee performance. Tickets are $5.00 for reserved seats in the front sections of the auditorium and $5.00 for general seating in the rear. Tickets are available at the EAC ticket office (928) 428-8228 nd unsold tickets will be available at the door.
Fall Sing: Halloween Edition 2015 promises a “scary” good time to celebrate an age-old tradition in a modern way with music to “treat” the ears, heart, and soul.
